The Yucatán Peninsula is home to the world’s most extensive flooded cave systems. In the cenotes of the Riviera Maya, exceptional visibility reveals spectacular light beams, haloclines, ancient limestone formations, submerged roots and, in some locations, remarkable hydrogen sulfide clouds.
From a first cavern dive to deeper sites such as Angelita and The Pit, every cenote offers a different experience. This guide allows you to compare the main cenote diving sites accessible from Playa del Carmen and open a detailed guide for each one.
At Halocline Explorers, we select cenotes according to your certification, buoyancy control, recent diving experience and current conditions. Our activities follow the safety and conservation principles promoted by CREER.
Find the Right Cenote for Your Experience
We have divided the cenotes into four categories to help you quickly identify the sites best suited to your diving profile.
🟢 Beginner Ideal for a first cenote diving experience, with spacious caverns, abundant natural light and accessible routes.
🟠 Intermediate For divers wishing to discover haloclines, more developed formations and extended overhead passages.
🔴 Deep For advanced divers wishing to explore deeper or more demanding cenotes.
⚫ Challenging For experienced divers with good buoyancy control looking for remote cenotes, exceptional formations and more complex diving conditions.
The indicated level is a general recommendation. The final choice of cenote depends on your certification, recent experience and the guide’s assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cenote Diving
What Is the Best Cenote for a First Dive?
Dos Ojos – Barbie Line, Carwash and Casa Cenote are among the best options for a first cenote diving experience. They offer spacious areas, abundant natural light and routes suitable for Open Water divers with good buoyancy control.
Do I Need to Be a Certified Cave Diver to Dive in the Cenotes?
No. Recreational divers remain within the cavern zone, close to natural daylight and accompanied by a qualified professional guide. Diving beyond this zone requires specific cave diving training and certification.
What Certification Do I Need for Cenote Diving in Mexico?
Some cenotes are accessible with an Open Water Diver certification. Deeper or more demanding sites require at least an Advanced Open Water Diver certification, good buoyancy control and sufficient recent diving experience.
How Do I Choose the Right Cenote for My Experience Level?
The choice depends on your certification, recent diving experience, buoyancy control and what you would like to discover. Before the dive, Halocline Explorers reviews your experience and recommends the cenotes best suited to your profile and the current conditions.
What Is the Water Temperature in the Cenotes?
The water temperature generally remains around 24–25°C (75–77°F) throughout the year. An appropriate wetsuit is recommended to remain comfortable during the dives.
