Cenote Orquídea is one of the most recently opened cenote diving sites in the Riviera Maya. Hidden in the jungle between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, it offers an experience very different from the region’s traditional cavern routes.

This immense vertical sinkhole features an impressive hydrogen sulfide cloud at approximately 20 metres, submerged tree trunks and a dark, mysterious atmosphere that is sometimes reminiscent of Cenote Angelita. Deeper than it initially appears, Orquídea is best suited to experienced divers looking for an unusual and relatively uncrowded cenote dive.

From the surface, Orquídea appears as a vast circular sinkhole hidden deep within the jungle.

The descent follows the limestone wall through exceptionally clear water. At approximately 20 metres, a spectacular hydrogen sulfide cloud appears, covering a large part of the bottom of the cenote.

Dead tree trunks emerge from this milky-white layer, creating an almost surreal underwater landscape. After passing through the cloud, divers once again enter perfectly clear water that reveals the immense scale of the cenote.

During the ascent, sunlight passes through the opening above and gradually illuminates the limestone walls of the vertical shaft.

After the safety briefing, your guide explains the deep dive profile, maximum planned depth and communication procedures.

The descent is made slowly along the limestone wall until reaching the hydrogen sulfide cloud at approximately 20 metres.

Depending on the planned profile, the group may remain above the cloud or briefly pass through it to observe the submerged trees and the distinctive underwater environment for which Orquídea is known.

The ascent is gradual, allowing divers to once again appreciate the immense vertical shaft and the changing light effects as they approach the surface.
