Cenote Taak Bi Luum: Complete Cenote Diving Guide in the Riviera Maya

Cenote diving at Taak Bi Luum, a cavern route reserved for experienced divers within the Sac Actun system.

The unique formations and famous “Gate of Hell” at Cenote Taak Bi Luum.

A diver exploring the dark passages and exceptional formations of Cenote Taak Bi Luum.

Cenote Taak Bi Luum is one of the most demanding cenote diving routes in the Riviera Maya. Located in Dos Ojos Park and part of the Sac Actun system, it is renowned for its unique geological formations, extremely dark atmosphere and famous passage known as “The Gate of Hell.”

Unlike brightly illuminated cenotes such as Dos Ojos or Chikin Ha, Taak Bi Luum immediately immerses divers in a mysterious environment where natural light is scarce and every movement requires excellent buoyancy control. This site is intended for divers who already have significant cenote diving experience.

Approximately 7 to 8.5 metres, depending on the route.

Approximately 25°C throughout the year.

Average dive duration

Approximately 50 to 60 minutes.

Availability of This Dive

Taak Bi Luum is offered by Halocline Explorers only to divers who demonstrate excellent buoyancy control and already possess significant cenote diving experience.

Due to the fragility of the site and CREER safety recommendations, this dive is not suitable as a first cenote diving experience.

Discover Cenote Taak Bi Luum

After descending into a vast underground chamber, the dive begins in shallow water, where a thin layer of hydrogen sulfide quickly becomes visible along the bottom.

The route then continues around a large open-water area before entering particularly dark passages containing the famous molten bubble-shaped formations, sometimes compared to toasted marshmallows. Their origin remains poorly understood.

One of the best-known sections is “The Gate of Hell,” a narrow opening bordered by large sediment dunes that reinforce the cenote’s mysterious atmosphere.

Due to the permanent darkness, divers frequently encounter the Yucatán blind cavefish (Typhliasina pearsei), an endemic species adapted to life in underground environments.

Why Dive at Cenote Taak Bi Luum?

Taak Bi Luum offers an experience completely different from other cenotes in the Riviera Maya.

Divers come here to discover:

  • Unique bubble-shaped limestone formations
  • The famous Gate of Hell
  • An extremely dark and immersive atmosphere
  • Large sediment dunes
  • A thin layer of hydrogen sulfide at the beginning of the route
  • The blind cavefish, an iconic species of the Yucatán aquifer

What to Expect During Your Dive

After a detailed briefing, your guide explains the planned route, propulsion techniques and the essential precautions required to protect the sediment and formations.

The dive begins inside a vast chamber before following the permanent guideline around the open-water area.

The group then enters the darker passages containing the famous limestone formations and Gate of Hell.

The shallow depth allows for a relatively long dive, but precise buoyancy control is essential to avoid disturbing the extremely fine sediment.

What Makes Cenote Taak Bi Luum Unique?

Taak Bi Luum has several characteristics that are found almost nowhere else:

  • Mysterious bubble-shaped formations
  • The famous Gate of Hell
  • An extremely dark atmosphere
  • A thin layer of hydrogen sulfide
  • Regular sightings of blind cavefish
  • A route reserved for the most experienced cenote divers

Tips From Your Guide

Taak Bi Luum is one of the most technically demanding cavern routes in the Riviera Maya.

Perfect buoyancy control, appropriate propulsion techniques such as the frog kick or equivalent, and excellent environmental awareness are essential to protect the formations and prevent any deterioration in visibility.

At Halocline Explorers, we generally offer this dive only to divers who have already completed several advanced or technical-level cenote dives.
