Cenote diving at Angelita, famous for its spectacular hydrogen sulfide cloud.

The famous “underwater river” of Cenote Angelita in the Riviera Maya.

A diver swimming above the hydrogen sulfide cloud at Cenote Angelita.

Cenote Angelita is one of the most famous and spectacular dives in Mexico. Located south of Tulum, this cenote is internationally renowned for its impressive hydrogen sulfide cloud, which creates the illusion of a river flowing underwater.

Unlike cenotes filled with stalactites and extensive galleries, Angelita is a deep vertical sinkhole where the experience focuses primarily on its unique hydrological phenomenon. This dive is intended for experienced divers looking for a truly extraordinary underwater experience.

Discover Cenote Angelita

From the surface, Angelita looks like a simple circular body of water surrounded by jungle.

The descent begins in slightly murky water before the visibility becomes exceptionally clear. As divers approach a depth of 27 to 30 metres, the famous hydrogen sulfide cloud gradually appears.

Approximately three metres thick, this white cloud creates the illusion of a river suspended underwater. Dead tree trunks emerge from the layer, producing a surreal landscape often described as a submerged forest.

This unique combination makes Angelita one of the most photographed dive sites on the planet.

Why Dive at Cenote Angelita?

Angelita offers an experience completely different from other cenotes in the Riviera Maya.

Its main attraction is the spectacular hydrogen sulfide cloud separating the freshwater from the saltwater below. This layer creates a striking visual illusion, often compared to a river or lake suspended underwater.

The submerged trees rising through the cloud reinforce the impression of an otherworldly landscape.

Very few dive sites in the world offer such a spectacular natural phenomenon.

What to Expect During Your Dive

After the safety briefing, your guide explains the deep-dive profile, maximum depth, communication procedures and planned limits.

The descent is made slowly along the wall until reaching a depth of approximately 30 metres.

The group then reaches the famous hydrogen sulfide cloud. Depending on the conditions and the selected dive profile, it may be possible to swim along the layer or briefly pass through it before spending a few moments beneath it to observe the submerged trees.

The ascent is made gradually, with careful control of the ascent rate and the required safety stop.

This dive requires excellent buoyancy control and careful air-consumption management.

What Makes Cenote Angelita Unique?

Angelita is internationally famous for its extraordinary underwater landscape.

During the dive, you can discover:

  • A spectacular hydrogen sulfide cloud
  • A remarkable underwater-river illusion
  • Submerged trees appearing to emerge from the mist
  • Considerable depth
  • Exceptional visibility above and below the cloud
  • One of Mexico’s most iconic cenote dives

Advice From Your Guide

Angelita is a deep dive that should not be underestimated.

Excellent buoyancy control, careful air management and strict adherence to the planned dive profile are essential.

The hydrogen sulfide cloud does not present a particular danger when briefly crossed during a properly conducted scuba dive with suitable equipment. However, it temporarily reduces visibility and significantly alters visual reference points.

This dive is intended for experienced divers accompanied by a professional guide.
