Who Can Participate in a Cave Dive?
Cave diving is reserved for divers holding an appropriate cave diving certification and recent experience in this environment. Every exploration is organized according to the participants’ actual qualification level, equipment configuration and the characteristics of the selected cave system.
At Halocline Explorers, no dive is conducted beyond the limits of your certification or experience. Before confirming your booking, we discuss your background and objectives with you so that we can select the routes best suited to your level, equipment configuration and expectations.
Certified Introductory Cave Divers can explore numerous systems appropriate to their qualification while remaining within the limits of their training.
Routes are selected to provide a progressive cave diving experience without complex navigation that exceeds the diver’s certification limits.
Full Cave Divers have access to a much wider selection of passages and routes.
Depending on their experience, dives may include circuits, traverses, intersections, jumps and more advanced navigation, while always respecting established safety procedures and the limits of the dive plan.
Suitably qualified technical divers can participate in more demanding cave explorations requiring specific planning, increased autonomy and, depending on the objectives of the dive, stage cylinders or additional equipment.
Certified CCR Cave Divers may explore the systems using their own rebreather, provided that their certification, recent experience and equipment are appropriate for the planned dive.
Procedures are developed according to the specific characteristics of the rebreather, the gases used and the required bailout strategy.

What Happens During a Cave Diving Day?
Every exploration is different, but a cave diving day generally follows a similar structure to ensure careful preparation and an enjoyable experience.
Pickup and Transportation
The day begins with pickup from your hotel or an agreed meeting point in Playa del Carmen or the surrounding area.
Transportation to the cenote is included, allowing you to enjoy your day without worrying about logistics.
Equipment Preparation and Checks
Upon arrival, we take the time to prepare the equipment and complete all necessary checks.
Depending on your configuration, this may include assembling equipment, conducting safety checks, analysing gases, labelling cylinders and completing a final verification before entering the water.
Complete Dive Briefing
A detailed briefing is conducted before every cave dive.
The briefing covers:
• The cave system being explored
• The planned route
• Maximum depths
• Approximate distances
• Gas planning
• Communication procedures
• Emergency procedures
• The main features and points of interest along the route
Every team member therefore understands the complete exploration plan before entering the water.
The Cave Exploration
The dive is conducted at a pace appropriate for the team.
The objective is not to travel as far as possible. It is to appreciate the cave system, observe its geological formations and move through a controlled environment while respecting established safety procedures.
Depending on the selected programme, the day may include one extended cave dive or two separate dives in the same site or two different cave systems.
Debriefing

Water temperature in the Riviera Maya cenotes generally remains between 24°C and 26°C throughout the year.
Appropriate exposure protection is essential for maintaining thermal comfort, especially during long or repetitive dives.
Depending on your sensitivity to cold, the planned dive time and your equipment configuration, a high-quality wetsuit or drysuit may be the most appropriate solution.
Checks Before Every Dive
Before entering the water, all equipment is checked with the diver.

What Is the Difference Between Cavern Diving and Cave Diving?

Can I Dive in Sidemount or Backmount Doubles?
