What Is the IANTD Advanced EANx Diver Course?
The IANTD Advanced EANx Diver course develops the knowledge and practical skills required to use Nitrox mixtures during the bottom portion of a dive and an oxygen-rich gas during decompression.

Advanced Nitrox Diver Course Prerequisites

- have at least 30 logged dives;
- be at least 15 years old with parental authorization;
- or be at least 18 years old without parental authorization.
The Deep Diver program may be completed in conjunction with the Advanced EANx Diver course.

Course Objectives
The course develops the skills required to plan and conduct a mandatory decompression dive using a Nitrox mixture and one decompression gas.

Advanced Nitrox Course Structure
The program includes three complementary parts.
Theory and Dive Planning
Theory sessions cover topics including:
- advanced Nitrox principles;
- oxygen physiology;
- central nervous system and pulmonary oxygen toxicity;
- PPO₂ calculations;
- maximum operating depth;
- decompression planning;
- gas selection;
- gas consumption and reserves;
- gas-switch procedures;
- normal and emergency procedures;
- team organization and communication.
Every dive is planned before entering the water.
The diver must be able to understand the plan, its limits and the procedures to follow if conditions or circumstances change.
Confined-Water Training
One or more confined-water sessions are used to practise skills before the deeper open-water dives.
Training includes:

- trim;
- propulsion techniques;
- valve shutdowns;
- decompression-cylinder handling;
- regulator switching;
- gas sharing;
- free-flow regulator management;
- SMB deployment;

Open-Water Dives
According to the IANTD standards used for the program, training includes at least:
- four dives;
- 120 minutes of bottom time;
- two dives between 30 and 45 metres;
- dives involving mandatory decompression;
- one decompression cylinder per diver.
Exercises are progressively integrated into the dives.
Depth and complexity increase only when the previous skills are sufficiently controlled.
Using a Decompression Gas
During the course, you will learn how to carry and use a decompression cylinder containing a gas appropriate for the planned dive.
The program allows decompression mixtures containing up to 100% oxygen.
Gas selection depends on factors including:
- dive profile;
- maximum depth;
- bottom time;
- planned decompression;
- maximum operating depth of the gas;
- total oxygen exposure.
Gas switches are performed as a team using a defined procedure to verify the cylinder, gas, depth and regulator before breathing from the decompression mix.
The decompression-gas PPO₂ must not exceed 1.6 at the time of use.
Equipment Configuration Used During Training
The Advanced EANx Diver course requires a redundant technical-diving configuration.
Two configurations are possible:
- manifolded doubles;
- sidemount.
Each diver also carries one decompression cylinder containing sufficient gas for the planned decompression.
The configuration must allow:
- access to valves;
- clear regulator identification;
- gas sharing;
- pressure monitoring;
- stable trim and buoyancy;
- clear management of the decompression cylinder;
- effective response to equipment failures.
Equipment is reviewed before the program begins.
Adjustments may be required when part of the configuration prevents the exercises from being performed safely and effectively.

Divers who do not yet hold a Deep Diver certification may complete it in conjunction with Advanced EANx Diver training.
According to the IANTD standards used for the combined program, it must include at least:
- six dives;
- 160 minutes of dive time;
- three dives between 30 and 45 metres;
- all required skills from both programs.
This pathway allows a coherent progression into deeper diving and mandatory decompression.
