Learn to Dive to 40 Metres in Mexico

Beyond 30 metres/100 feet, scuba diving requires more precise planning and better control of essential procedures.

Gas consumption increases with depth, available dive time decreases and the consequences of a poor decision can become more serious. Buoyancy, ascent rate and communication with your buddy must therefore be carefully controlled.

The Deep Diver course teaches you to understand these additional considerations and prepare deeper dives within recreational diving limits.

The objective is not simply to descend deeper. It is to understand why, when and how to conduct a dive to a maximum depth of 40 metres/132 feet.

Why Complete a Deep Diver Course?

An Advanced Open Water certification generally qualifies a diver to a maximum depth of 30 metres/100 feet.

The Deep Diver course progressively extends this limit to 40 metres/132 feet.

The course allows you to:

  • better understand the effects of depth;
  • plan your gas consumption;
  • calculate gas requirements and reserves;
  • improve your buoyancy;
  • precisely control your ascents;
  • perform simulated decompression stops;
  • deploy a surface marker buoy from depth;
  • respond to a gas-supply failure;
  • use equipment with a redundant gas source;
  • prepare deep dives without mandatory decompression.

The course also provides excellent preparation for Advanced Nitrox, Technical Diver, Recreational Trimix and other advanced training programs.

Deep Diving Training in Playa del Carmen

Plongeuse traversant les rayons lumineux du cénote The Pit près de Tulum, au Mexique.

Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya provide several environments suitable for Deep Diver training.

Deep reefs allow you to develop gas-management and ascent skills in a genuine ocean environment. Depending on the course program and current conditions, other deep sites in the region may also be used to develop the required skills.

Dive-site selection depends on:

  • weather conditions;
  • sea conditions;
  • current;
  • visibility;
  • the participants’ experience;
  • the objectives of each dive;
  • the availability of a suitable site for the planned depth.

The maximum depth of 40 metres/132 feet is never a compulsory target. Safety and mastery of the required skills always remain the priorities.

Why Choose the IANTD Deep Diver Certification?

IANTD, the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers, provides courses ranging from recreational diving to technical, Trimix, rebreather and cave diving.

The IANTD Deep Diver course prepares divers to plan and conduct dives to a maximum depth of 40 metres/132 feet using air, Nitrox or a suitable Recreational Trimix mixture.

The program places particular emphasis on:

  • planning;
  • gas management;
  • redundancy;
  • buoyancy control;
  • ascent procedures;
  • gas sharing;
  • valve manipulation;
  • surface marker buoy deployment;
  • incident prevention.

IANTD is a member of the World Recreational Scuba Training Council through the United States RSTC Council. Its training standards are also compliant with relevant EUF and ISO standards.

Deep Diver Training in English in Mexico

Deep diving involves more advanced concepts related to pressure, gas consumption, narcosis and dive planning.

At Halocline Explorers, your Deep Diver course in Playa del Carmen can be taught entirely in English.

Academic lessons, calculations, dive briefings and procedures are explained in your preferred language so that you can clearly understand the risks and decisions associated with every dive.

Training is also available in French and Spanish.

Deep Diver Course Program

The course is organized over two intensive days. It includes academic training, a confined-water session and four open-water dives.

At least two dives must be conducted between 27 and 40 metres/90 and 132 feet.

Day 1 – Planning and Initial Dives

The first day begins with academic training and equipment preparation.

You will study:

  • the effects of pressure;
  • respiratory gas consumption;
  • RMV calculations;
  • gas planning;
  • required gas reserves;
  • narcosis;
  • oxygen exposure;
  • no-decompression limits;
  • ascent procedures;
  • emergency management.

A confined-water session is then used to check the equipment configuration and practise the initial procedures.

The dives allow you to practise:

  • buoyancy control;
  • trim;
  • propulsion techniques;
  • communication;
  • regulator switching;
  • closing and reopening cylinder valves;
  • gas sharing;
  • controlled ascents.

Day 2 – Deep Dives and Procedures

The second day allows you to apply the planning methods and procedures during deeper dives.

Exercises include:

  • verifying gas consumption;
  • monitoring time and depth;
  • managing alternate regulators;
  • simulated decompression stops;
  • deploying a surface marker buoy from depth;
  • completing a controlled ascent under an SMB;
  • maintaining stable stops;
  • communicating with your buddy;
  • managing an out-of-gas situation.

At least two dives in the program must reach a depth between 27 and 40 metres/90 and 132 feet.

Dive Planning and Gas Management

Gas consumption increases directly with ambient pressure. A diver will therefore consume their cylinder significantly faster at 40 metres than at 10 metres.

During the course, you will learn to:

  • determine your respiratory gas consumption;
  • calculate your RMV;
  • estimate consumption at the planned depth;
  • calculate the gas required for the dive;
  • establish an appropriate reserve;
  • monitor cylinder pressure during the dive;
  • define turn and ascent pressures;
  • plan for a gas-sharing emergency.

This planning verifies before entering the water that the available gas is appropriate for the planned profile and a potential emergency.

Buoyancy and Controlled Ascents

A poorly controlled ascent can have more serious consequences after a deeper dive.

The course develops your ability to:

  • maintain a stable depth;
  • hover without changing depth;
  • control your body position;
  • respect a precise ascent rate;
  • stop at different depths;
  • complete simulated decompression stops;
  • deploy a surface marker buoy;
  • ascend under an SMB;
  • maintain a safety stop without holding a line.

IANTD standards include controlled ascents and simulated stops at different depths to develop your precision.

Equipment Configuration and Redundancy

IANTD standards require a gas-redundancy system suitable for deep diving.

Permitted configurations may include:

  • a single cylinder fitted with a dual-outlet Y or H valve;
  • a primary cylinder accompanied by an independent pony cylinder;
  • back-mounted doubles with an isolating manifold;
  • a suitable sidemount configuration.

The configuration selected depends on your certifications, experience and the equipment available.

Every diver must have access to an alternative gas source in the event of a primary-regulator failure.

What You Will Learn During the Course

The IANTD Deep Diver course includes:

  • deep-dive planning;
  • gas-consumption calculations;
  • gas-reserve management;
  • understanding the effects of pressure;
  • preventing and managing narcosis;
  • using suitable breathing mixtures;
  • buoyancy and trim;
  • propulsion techniques;
  • controlled-rate ascents;
  • simulated decompression stops;
  • gas sharing;
  • gas-sharing ascents;
  • regulator switching;
  • closing and reopening cylinder valves;
  • surface marker buoy deployment;
  • controlled ascents under an SMB;
  • emergency procedures.

The minimum age for the full certification is 15 with parental or legal-guardian authorization, or 18 without authorization.

Your actual diving level will be assessed before and during the course. Additional preparation may be recommended if some fundamental skills are not sufficiently mastered.

Do You Have to Reach 40 Metres?

No. The maximum permitted depth is 40 metres/132 feet, but IANTD standards do not require a dive to reach exactly this depth.

Two dives must be conducted between 27 and 40 metres/90 and 132 feet.

The actual depth reached depends on:

  • the diver’s level;
  • gas consumption;
  • diving conditions;
  • the selected dive site;
  • visibility;
  • current;
  • the instructor’s assessment.

A certification should never be completed at a depth that is inappropriate for the conditions or the diver’s abilities.

Deep Diver or Deep Deco Diver?

These two certifications have different objectives.

Deep Diver

The Deep Diver course prepares you for dives to a maximum depth of 40 metres/132 feet without planned mandatory decompression.

Stops completed during the course are simulated decompression stops and control exercises.

Deep Deco Diver

The Deep Deco Diver course teaches you to plan and conduct dives involving limited mandatory decompression.

It has additional prerequisites, equipment requirements and procedures.

The Deep Diver certification is a prerequisite for entering the IANTD Deep Deco Diver program.

Why Train With Halocline Explorers?

Depth should never be considered an isolated objective. A deep dive must have a clear purpose, be properly planned and use an appropriate equipment configuration.

At Halocline Explorers, we focus on:

  • understanding dive planning;
  • precise gas management;
  • equipment redundancy;
  • buoyancy control;
  • controlled ascents;
  • stability during stops;
  • buddy communication;
  • incident prevention;
  • the ability to abort a dive when necessary.

Our experience in technical, Trimix, rebreather and cave diving allows us to teach rigorous foundations while respecting the limits of a recreational Deep Diver course.

What Can You Do After Certification?

After earning your IANTD Deep Diver certification, you will be qualified to plan and conduct dives to a maximum depth of 40 metres/132 feet without mandatory decompression, within the limits of your experience.

You can:

  • discover deeper reefs;
  • access a wider range of dive sites;
  • improve your dive planning;
  • better manage your gas consumption;
  • progress toward Deep Deco Diver;
  • complete an Advanced Nitrox course;
  • progress toward Technical Diver;
  • prepare for Recreational Trimix;
  • develop your experience before technical training.

The maximum depth stated on a certification never replaces experience. Your progression should remain gradual after completing the course.
