Cenote Taak Bi Luum is one of the most demanding cenote diving routes in the Riviera Maya. Located in Dos Ojos Park and part of the Sac Actun system, it is renowned for its unique geological formations, extremely dark atmosphere and famous passage known as “The Gate of Hell.”

Unlike brightly illuminated cenotes such as Dos Ojos or Chikin Ha, Taak Bi Luum immediately immerses divers in a mysterious environment where natural light is scarce and every movement requires excellent buoyancy control. This site is intended for divers who already have significant cenote diving experience.

After descending into a vast underground chamber, the dive begins in shallow water, where a thin layer of hydrogen sulfide quickly becomes visible along the bottom.

The route then continues around a large open-water area before entering particularly dark passages containing the famous molten bubble-shaped formations, sometimes compared to toasted marshmallows. Their origin remains poorly understood.

One of the best-known sections is “The Gate of Hell,” a narrow opening bordered by large sediment dunes that reinforce the cenote’s mysterious atmosphere.

Due to the permanent darkness, divers frequently encounter the Yucatán blind cavefish (Typhliasina pearsei), an endemic species adapted to life in underground environments.
