Learn to Dive With Nitrox in Mexico
Nitrox, also known as EANx or enriched air, is a breathing mixture containing a higher percentage of oxygen than standard air.
Air contains approximately 21% oxygen. The Nitrox mixtures most commonly used in recreational scuba diving are EAN32, containing 32% oxygen, and EAN36, containing 36% oxygen.
The higher oxygen percentage reduces the amount of nitrogen breathed during an identical dive profile. Depending on the depth and mixture used, this can extend the no-decompression limit or reduce nitrogen exposure compared with the same dive performed using air.

Course Requirements
To participate in the IANTD Enriched Air Nitrox Diver course, you must hold an Open Water Diver certification or equivalent.
The Nitrox course can also be completed in conjunction with the Open Water Diver course.
You must:
- present your current certification if you are already a diver;
- understand the academic concepts covered during the course;
- correctly complete the gas-analysis procedures;
- pass the final written examination.
The minimum age for the full certification is 15 with parental or legal-guardian authorization, or 18 without authorization.
A Junior Enriched Air Nitrox Diver certification may be available for participants between 10 and 14 years old.
Are Dives Required for the Nitrox Certification?
IANTD standards do not require any dives to obtain the Enriched Air Nitrox Diver certification.
The certification is issued after completing:
- the academic portion;
- the planning exercises;
- the gas-analysis procedures;
- correct cylinder identification;
- the written examination.
Optional Nitrox dives can be added separately if you want to apply your new knowledge immediately.
These dives must remain within the maximum depth permitted by your current certification and the maximum operating depth of the selected breathing mixture.
Does Nitrox Allow You to Dive Deeper?
No. The Nitrox Diver course does not automatically increase your maximum certification depth.
For example:
- an Open Water Diver remains limited to 18 metres/60 feet;
- an Advanced Open Water Diver remains limited to 30 metres/100 feet;
- a Deep Diver may dive to a maximum of 40 metres/130 feet.
You must also respect the maximum operating depth of the selected mixture. Some oxygen-rich mixtures have a shallower maximum operating depth than the maximum depth allowed by your existing certification.
Nitrox is primarily used to manage nitrogen exposure and no-decompression limits, not to dive deeper.
