Learn to Scuba Dive in Playa del Carmen

The Open Water Diver course is the first complete scuba diving certification. It is designed for beginners who want to learn progressively and develop solid foundations for their future underwater adventures.

You will learn how to prepare your equipment, control your buoyancy, breathe comfortably underwater, communicate with your buddy and respond correctly to common situations that may occur during a dive.

Your training takes place in Playa del Carmen, in the heart of Mexico’s Riviera Maya. The reefs of the Caribbean Sea provide an excellent environment for your first dives: warm water, tropical fish, coral formations and dive sites suitable for training.

No previous scuba diving experience is required.

The course is generally organized over three days. The precise schedule may be adapted according to diving conditions and your progression.

Day 1 – Theory and Confined-Water Training

The first day introduces the essential principles of scuba diving and allows you to become familiar with the equipment.

You will learn how to:

  • prepare, check and disassemble your equipment;
  • use your buoyancy compensator and regulator;
  • clear and replace your mask underwater;
  • recover a regulator;
  • control your breathing and buoyancy;
  • communicate using diving hand signals;
  • share gas with another diver;
  • perform a controlled ascent;
  • assist a buddy at the surface.

Exercises are repeated progressively until you can perform them comfortably and safely.

Day 2 – Your First Open-Water Dives

You will complete your first two open-water dives on shallow dive sites around Playa del Carmen.

These dives allow you to repeat the skills learned in confined water and become more comfortable in a real diving environment.

In accordance with IANTD standards, the first two dives are conducted between approximately 6 and 9 metres/20 and 30 feet.

Day 3 – Progression and Certification

The final two dives allow you to improve your buoyancy, body position, communication and ability to dive effectively with your buddy.

At least one of these dives is conducted between 9 and 18 metres/30 and 60 feet, depending on your progression and the conditions.

Once all required knowledge and skills have been completed and validated, you will receive your IANTD Open Water Diver certification.
