From the surface, The Pit appears to be a simple circular sinkhole surrounded by jungle.

The descent begins in exceptionally clear water. As divers descend, immense beams of sunlight penetrate the water column and create a true cathedral of light when the sun is sufficiently high in the sky.

At approximately 15 metres, divers pass through a halocline where freshwater meets saltwater.

Continuing the descent to approximately 30 metres, the famous hydrogen sulfide cloud gradually appears. Several submerged tree trunks lie beneath this whitish layer, creating the illusion of a ghostly forest suspended underwater.

What to Expect During Your Dive

After the safety briefing, your guide explains the deep-dive profile, maximum depth and communication procedures.

The descent is made slowly along the wall until reaching the area illuminated by the famous beams of sunlight.

The group then continues to a depth of approximately 30 metres, where the hydrogen sulfide cloud appears. Depending on the selected profile, it may be possible to pass briefly through this layer to observe the submerged trees located immediately beneath it.

The ascent is gradual, providing another opportunity to enjoy the columns of sunlight penetrating the entire cenote.

The total dive time depends on air consumption and the planned dive profile but is generally between 35 and 45 minutes.
